Students and teachers from across Europe helped "knowledge build itself a home" in Padua in 1222. Today the wisdom, background and reputation of its maestri and alumni, who in turn taught throughout Europe and the world, have enabled the University of Padua to become a hub of science and culture.
The work of maestri such as Andrea Vesalio, Gianbattista Morgagni, Gabriele Falloppio, Girolamo Fabrici d'Acquapendente, Giacomo Zabarella and Marco Mantua Benavides helped lay the foundations of the University's reputation.
Galileo Galilei taught at the University for eighteen years where his freedom as a scientist and a researcher was upheld by the Universa universis Patavina libertas. He was one of the founding fathers of modern science, which he helped free from the constraints of religion.
Noted University of Padua alumni include Francesco Guicciardini, Leon Battista Alberti, Tommaso Campanella, Erasmus of Rotterdam and Nicholas Copernicus; Elena Cornaro Piscopia, the world's first woman graduate, was awarded her degree at Padua in 1678.
This tradition of culture and science culminated in the foundation of the Galilean School of Higher Education in 2004. The School has laid down a path towards excellence, which complements standard degree courses with advanced training in order to enhance the cultural and scientific background of young people and to prepare them fully for research work.
